Probiotics can help with IBS-D by restoring the natural balance of bacteria in the gut.
Lactobacillus strains of bacteria are often recommended for IBS, including:
- Lactobacillus acidophilus
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus
- Lactobacillus helveticus
Lactobacillus bacteria are naturally found in the gastro-intestinal tract, but can become depleted by overgrowth of other strains of bacteria (SIBO), antibiotic use, or illness.
Bacterial balance can be restored by using a probiotic supplement such as All-Flora.
Studies have shown that probiotics taken in capsule form survive digestion better than probiotics in yoghurt. Dairy is also a trigger for IBS diarrhea, so people with IBS are recommended to take their probiotics as capsules rather than yoghurt.
